Old News...

Good morning!  Just a quickie post this morning... if I get the chance I may stop by another local Thrift Shop, Trinity Mission Thrift while Will is in preschool.  I can run through in under 10 minutes so it's a fast in and out.  If there is anything good I will definitely let you know.

I did want to share two easy projects that I wrapped up recently.  One is this gossip bench/telephone table that came from that flea market I mentioned yesterday.  The lines were great and it is sturdy, but the brown vinyl upholstery was awful.  I first switched it out in favor of a big orange and brown organic print, that wasn't great in my entry hall.  One of those things, you think it will pop, but in reality it just doesn't look right...sooo... I switched it out a second time for a green and brown pattern.  The result was much better.  See for yourself.

Also today I will let you in on the recent finds from my favorite Indianapolis/Broad Ripple area consignment shop, The Toggery.  I bring my clothes in and I shop there.  They recently began a program where you can "shop for free"... yes, I did say for free!  If you bring you old clothes in you can use the dollars you make selling and shop in the store with them.  How about that for recycling?  I know!  Unbelievable!  You take what you don't want, taking up space in your closet, sell it... and then use the money to buy lovely things that others have downsized from their closets!  You have no idea the number of Anthropologie items I have acquired in this way!  Not to mention big name designers, the real deal NOT knock-offs!  Patience is key when shopping consignment, but the pay off is enormous.  I will get some photos posted of my Toggery finds later on this afternoon!

Ok, so I stopped at Trinity Thrift about an hour ago and I got a great score!  A fully functional gate leg table with some minor surface damage for $30!!!!  AWESOME!!! I have wanted a gate leg table for years and I got one.  I am going to bag the low sleek coffee table, although someone really ought to rescue it... and put the funky taller table in the living.  My instinct is to eventually paint it a saturated color as well, but I don't have a color in mind as yet.  Open to suggestions, though.  Here it is in the shop. 

I quickly cleaned and polished with Olde English and placed it in the living room.  I think I like it!  It could use some color.... but that will wait for right now.  What do you think?

Enjoy the evening all.  I will have more tomorrow, no doubt.... next week I have a haircut scheduled at A-Do in Broad Ripple and am looking forward to seeing the best salon staff EVER!  New hair is always something to look forward to... it's like a party but without the regret of food and drink.... sooo satisfying!

As I said on Thursday, my friend Dawn and I headed back to Indianapolis to do a little bargain shopping/thrifting.  We hit some good spots on Thursday... Thrifty Threads, located just off of 86th street was a fun stop and I wish I had room for the fabulous cube table we saw there.  It was big and block-y and low and would have been awesome in a family room.  We even thought that it would have been fun to eat Chinese take-out at that table!  I did not buy the table, but someone sure should!  If I had the space for it I would sand it down and stain it a dark, almost black stain then a couple coats of matte finish and it would be AMAZING!  I did find a few small item, a table caddy, and some little aluminum pots that are perfect for at home Indian food... yummi!

We also stopped at a Goodwill at 86th and Westfield Blvd, but had no luck, so on to the Goodwill in Brownsburg and there we both found a few fun items... some we bought and others we passed by, but there were in fact many cute items!  The BEST was talking Dawn into buying a pair of china busts.  We had been looking at them and I almost put them in my cart but decided against it... Dawn asked what I would do those, so I told her I would sand them and spray paint them a bright pop art-y color, and voila', instant focal point, modern and interesting!  She put both in her cart!!!!

Paint these a pop art color and put them on the mantle... up the mod factor!

I can't wait to see what color she picks.  I will probably wish I had done it myself, but you can't do every project you think of, right?

Today I made a mad dash through the local flea market... yes, I said flea market.  It can be a bit oogie but every so often there is a glut of good furniture to be had.  Today I found a couple of things that were interesting.  The lines of  both the dining room table and the midcentury coffee table spoke to me:  clean, neutral and cool.  The kitchen table as island  (it was only about 3x4) is intriguing, although upon further thought it would still be too big for the kitchen.  I may be going back for that coffee table... tomorrow, hmmm.  Thoughts?  Anyone looking for anything I should be looking out for on my adventures?

Just a quick post this morning.  I am heading to Indy later this morning with my friend Dawn.  On the list of stops Anthropologie (sale room), checking out a new Good will and an old favorite Thrify Threads.  Thrifty Threads used to be located in the heart of Broad Ripple when I lived there too many years ago.  It was one of my regular haunts and I haven't been in a long time.  They moved to West 86th Street which isn't on my usual path but today we are planning an little adventure.  Will let you all know later what, if any amazing finds are located today.  More later, hopefully with pics!

Wednesday....

Mercudi mens a siti mana.  Translated:  Wednesday in the middle of the week.  A true statement but in my mother's Italian coloquial vernacular it means, "something that stands out from the others... like Wednesday in the middle of the week."  I grew up thinking that standing out apart fom the others, especially in the way you dressed was a bad thing.  Perhaps twelve years of Catholic school uniforms had something to do with this... hhmmmmm... but as I got older I realized that I liked standing out having my own style and being unique.  I have my favorite shops.  Anthropologie is at the top of the list, but while I love the shop and have visited as many as I can, it is the clothes and not the store itself that draws my attention.  I love to thrift, resale, Ebay... etc.  I look for good clothes, shoes, accessories for me and for my home.  It is a hobby but someday I want it to be my livelihood.  I believe I could do it if only given a chance. 

Yesterday I got a "get out of jail free" card and headed to Indianapolis.  I grew up in the Broad Ripple area.   It was always a bit bohemian and in the last 17 yrs it has become much more "big city" with eclectic shops, ethnic restaurants, delis, bakeries and clothing and home boutiques.... it is a wonderful area!  My favorite shops currently are Artifacts for unique handmade jewelry, The Toggery (#1 FAV) for a huge selection of consignment clothing, shoes and accessories.... lots of Anthropologie pieces found in here for less than half the retail, N. Rue for selective vintage clothing items as well as new merchandise, Mill End Fabrics for beautiful fabrics and remnants just right for recovering that cool piece of thrifted vintage furniture, Rag-O-Rama for more resale clothing, searching the racks is a must in there but it can yield a terrific find on any given day and Surroundings a shop jam packed with home decor lovlieness.  If you are wondering why I didn't list my ultimate favorite, Anthropologie... it isn't located in Broad Ripple....
